Social Responsibility means that as well as working hard to run a business, we also need to work just as hard getting involved with the local communities and protecting the environment around us.
We take this additional responsibility very seriously and we will publish our Social Responsibility Strategy at the beginning of 2009.
To stay in business we need to use our money wisely. We have to look for value for money when we buy goods and services, but we can also use our buying power to encourage our suppliers to adopt similar environmental goals.
We are determined to make sure that our suppliers meet the highest environmental standards. We will only buy goods from suppliers who are legally compliant with all UK environmental standards and who can also demonstrate their commitment to the environment. But this is just the start. We also want to include extra environmental measures as part of their contract with us, and we will make sure that the suppliers stick to their targets.
The goods and services we get from the suppliers must also be of the highest environmental standards; it isn't always true that there is a higher price to pay for greener products!
Like all Train Operating Companies, we don't actually own any of the land we use. All our stations, car parks and access roads are leased from Network Rail. Because they own so much land throughout the country, Network Rail has a detailed biodiversity strategy, a document which states how it wants to help preserve the wide variety of plants and animals on and around stations and railway lines.
We want to work with Network Rail and local communities to help to make any spare land in our lease areas better places for people, plants and animals.
We also want to make sure that we do not affect ecological diversity as a result.
We’ll use this page to tell you about any new schemes and how you can get involved.
